LUCKNOW: The National Commission of Women (NCW) on Monday took cognizance of Samajwadi Party (SP) chief and former chief minister Akhilesh Yadav’s tweet against suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma and wrote to the director general of police (DGP), Uttar Pradesh, to take immediate action against him under relevant provisions of law.
The NCW said that it has sought a “fair and time-bound investigation” into the matter. Action taken must be apprised within three days, it said.
Former UP CM and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav in a tweet from his personal Twitter handle had made a remark against Nupur Sharma in Hindi on July 1.
The panel has termed the tweet as “instigating a feeling of hatred and ill will” against Nupur Sharma and as “inciting communal disharmony between the two religious groups”.
In its two-page letter to the DGP, NCW stated that the comments made by Akhilesh Yadav involve crime under the charges of criminal intimidation, word gesture intended to insult modesty of woman, and intentional insult to provoke breach of peace.
