LUCKNOW: A shocking case of alleged vigilante-style punishment meted out to minors over accusations of wheat theft has surfaced in UP’s Raebareli district, triggering outrage after a video of the incident went viral on social media.
The incident took place in Usmanpur Majre Majhigawan village under the Harchandpur police station area. According to local reports, village head Vijay allegedly tied several children to an electric pole with ropes after accusing them of stealing wheat.
The video purportedly shows the frightened and visibly distressed children standing tied to the pole while locals gathered nearby. The incident has drawn widespread criticism, with many demanding strict action against the gram pradhan for allegedly humiliating and physically restraining the minors.
After the video surfaced online, police officials took cognisance of the matter and initiated an investigation. Police said they are examining the viral footage and collecting statements from villagers and the families of the children involved.
Officials stated that appropriate legal action would be taken based on the findings of the inquiry. The incident has sparked anger among residents and social media users, who described the punishment as inhuman and unlawful.
Raebareli SP, Ravi Kumar said that a deputy SP-rank officer is looking into the matter.
