RLD dissolves its state unit in UP as its prepare for 2027 challenge
Lucknow: The Jayant Chaudhary-led Rashtriya Lok Dal, an ally of the BJP, on Tuesday dissolved its UP state executive, in a move that potentially necessitated restructuring of the party’s organisational command ahead of the high-stakes UP Assembly elections due early next year.Sources said that the decision was taken at the party’s National Executive Committee, headed by RLD national president Jayant Chaudhary, in New Delhi on the occasion of the death anniversary of Bharat Ratna and former Prime Minister Chaudhary Charan Singh on May 29. The decision was formally implemented on Tuesday. However, the party did not remove its state president, Ramashish Rai, who would keep functioning until the next state chief is appointed by the party. The rest of the state functionaries were removed with immediate effect. The party said that a new state executive committee would be constituted soon with the aim of making the state organisation more “effective, active and robust”.Sources said that the party planned a rejig in its organisational machinery capable of working in coordination with BJP while simultaneously protecting its own political identity.
Dissolving the executive allowed the leadership to appoint a team aligned with the current political strategy.Analysts said that the move suggested that the existing state organisation may not have met the expectations of the party leadership in terms of expansion, membership drives, booth management or coordination with district units. “A fresh executive provides an opportunity to reward active leaders and sideline ineffective ones,” a senior RLD leader said.Sources said that the RLD also looked to expand beyond its traditional Jat support base, which remains concentrated in western UP. The new state committee could include greater representation from non-Jat communities, youth leaders, women and regions outside western Uttar Pradesh. The decision to retain state president Ramashish Rai indicates continuity at the top while restructuring the rest of the organisation. A senior RLD leader said that the party wanted stability during the transition rather than creating uncertainty by changing every position simultaneously.Politically, the timing was particularly important. Since joining the NDA in 2024, the RLD has enjoyed greater national visibility — Jayant himself was inducted into Modi’s Council of Ministers. However, the party continues to face a challenge: translating this goodwill into electoral strength in 2027.Sources said that RLD wanted to demonstrate that it was strengthening its organisation and deserved a respectable share in future seat-sharing negotiations with the senior ally BJP.
