‘Evening guests’ for 3 years, 250 school students in Ludhiana to get a safe homecoming.

Ludhiana: Hundreds of primary students forced into a cramped "evening shift" at a neighbouring campus are expected to return to their home school within eight weeks as a major renovation project nears completion.The Govt Primary School on Post Office Road (Shahi Mohalla) was largely abandoned during the academic year 2022-23 after structural inspectors declared part of the building unsafe. The move forced 250-odd students into a makeshift relocation at the Kundanpuri primary school, where they faced infrastructure shortages and logistical hurdles.The transition to the Kundanpuri was fraught with challenges. The host school was already struggling with land ownership disputes and limited resources. To accommodate the influx, Shahi Mohalla students were moved to an evening batch, a schedule that many parents resisted."It was difficult to convince parents to send their children in the evening, as most prefer morning hours," school officials said. In the interim, students were often forced to attend lessons in verandas due to a lack of available classrooms and benches.The reconstruction projectLocal MLA Madan Lal Bagga launched a ₹10-lakh renovation work after a recent visit to the site. The project aims to restore the unsafe sections, refurbish five classrooms, install two separate washrooms, do new floor tiling, and modernise interior fittings."The project has started recently and we hope it will be completed soon with all the required facilities," said Shalini, a teacher at the school. "There were logistical challenges, but we managed through joint efforts. Now, we hope to return within two months." The students, displaced for about three years, met the news with enthusiasm.
