Madurai: Observing that the government is the only competent authority to take a final decision with regard to conduct of jallikattu, the Madras high court has dismissed a plea seeking permission for conducting jallikattu at Regunathapuram village in Pudukottai district.
The court was hearing a petition filed by R Manickam. He sought permission to conduct jallikattu jointly by all communities of the village on January 17 by providing adequate police protection. The petitioner said he had submitted representations to the authorities seeking permission to conduct jallikattu. Since the same was not considered the petitioner moved the HC Madurai bench seeking relief.
The government pleader submitted that a peace committee meeting was conducted on January 3 at the village. Since there is a law and order issue, the administration is yet to take a final decision . A division bench of justice D Krishnakumar and justice R Vijayakumar said the high court is not inclined to entertain this petition. tnn
