MUMBAI: The Bombay high court on Monday constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the 'encounter' death of Akshay Shinde, the main accused in the Badlapur school sexual assault case.
The SIT will function under the supervision of Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Lakhmi Gautam and will be headed by a DCP-rank officer, who will handpick the investigating team. The state CID has been directed to hand over all relevant documents and papers to the SIT within two days.
The court said it is undisputed that the deceased died of bullet injuries sustained during the police encounter. It observed that the Maharashtra government’s reluctance to register an FIR has left the victim’s parents “helpless”, and noted that “a constitutional court cannot remain a mute spectator.”
The court also rejected the state’s request to stay the order for two weeks to allow it to move the Supreme Court.
