Mumbai Rains Live Updates: City rained out, monsoon tally hits 2,310.8mm; Thane records 187mm rain in 24 hours

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday issued a red nowcast warning for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Raigad, and Ratnagiri districts, forecasting intense to very intense rainfall spells accompanied by gusty winds of 40–50 kmph, gusting up to 60 kmph. The warning, valid for three hours, comes amid heavy downpour that has already claimed six lives in Maharashtra in the past 24 hours, with five persons reported missing in Nanded district due to flood-like conditions. The State Disaster Management Department said 18 NDRF and six SDRF teams have been deployed, with SDRF rescuing 293 people in Mukhed taluka of Nanded.

In Mumbai, torrential rains over the past five days have made it the wettest August in five years, with over 837 mm of rainfall recorded. On Tuesday, 400 residents were evacuated from low-lying areas around the swelling Mithi river. Widespread waterlogging disrupted traffic, grounded 135 BEST bus routes, and forced diversion of 11 flights along with 24 “go-arounds.” One man was electrocuted at Bhandup’s LBS Marg, while two earlier deaths were reported from Napean Sea Road and Kanjurmarg. Power outages affected Kurla, Andheri, Kandivli, and Mira Road.

Local train services on the Central Railway’s harbour line were fully restored by 3 am Wednesday, more than 15 hours after suspension due to waterlogged tracks. Main line services between CSMT and Thane had resumed Tuesday evening, while some Western Railway suburban services remained cancelled due to residual waterlogging.

Authorities in Pune issued a red alert for Ghat areas and increased water discharge from Khadakwasla and Pawna dams, both over 95% full. District Collector Jitendra Dudi said releases were being timed carefully to avoid flooding. Several parts of Pune city remain under an orange alert.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has declared holidays for schools and colleges in multiple civic jurisdictions, though it clarified that a viral message about closures in Mumbai on August 20 was fake. The IMD has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall in Konkan and central Maharashtra until August 21, with relief expected from Thursday under a yellow alert.
