MUMBAI:
Rain is unlikely to keep its date with the city. The normal date for onset of
monsoon over Mumbai is considered as June 10, but
India Meteorological Department (IMD) officials said the south-west monsoon may not reach here till then.
IMD said on Friday that rainfall for the country for 2019 is likely to be normal, which is 96-104% of long average period. IMD had hinted at a delayed onset of rain over Mumbai, considering that the normal date of June 1 over Kerala was unlikely.
The south-west monsoon onset is likely over Kerala on June 6, with a model error of plus-minus four days, IMD said.
Shubangi Bhute from IMD Mumbai said, “Assorted rain showers are expected in parts of south Konkan, but North Konkan, including Mumbai, will have to wait. Wind direction and moisture content is not favourable now for showers. Wind direction needs to be south-westerly and moisture content needs to be high.”
Last year, while the monsoon arrived a day before its official date, few days before there was thundering/lightning, especially at night. The official onset of monsoon over Mumbai last year was on June 9.
