Rains lash Mumbai, adjoining areas; more showers on Tuesday

MUMBAI: Pre-monsoon rains accompanied by thunderstorm lash Mumbai on Monday night. Many parts of Mumbai and its neighbouring areas including Thane, Navi Mumbai and Kalyan witnessed rains.

IMD has forecast another spell of moderate rainfall on Tuesday as well.



Mumbai witnessed season's first shower on Sunday night. The light drizzle brought relief to the residents from the scorching summer heat. The weekend temperatures recorded at both the observatories were above normal.

Twenty-nine mm of rain was witnessed from 9pm to 10pm in Bhandup Complex, Gavanpada Fire Station, while Mulund saw 17mm of rain and Kurla Fire station got 7mm and Ghatkopar-6 mm.

Western suburbs at Chincholi Fire Station got 13 mm while Dindoshi Fire Station and Malwani Fire Station witnessed 13mm and 10mm rains respectively.

Cyclonic storm Vayu meanwhile also had formed, however, there was no direct threat to Mumbai.

Weather officials however said that Mumbaikars would need to wait for at least a week before monsoons are officially declared over the city. June 10 is the official date for the arrival of monsoons in Mumbai. This year the arrival of south-west monsoons was delayed over Kerala as well. "South-west Monsoon has further advanced into remaining parts of south Arabian Sea and Lakshadweep area, most parts of Kerala, some more parts of Tamil Nadu, remaining parts of southeast Bay of Bengal, most parts of southwest & east Central Bay of Bengal, some more parts of northeast Bay of Bengal, some parts of west-central Bay of Bengal, most parts of Mizoram and some parts of Manipur," said IMD in its official release.



In Mumbai, initially the rains were witnessed in areas like Kalyan, Dombivli, Ulhasnagar and parts of Navi Mumbai. Later areas like Powai, Mahim, Shivaji Park in Dadar, Matunga, Juhu, Khar and Ghatkopar also witnessed rains.
