MUMBAI: The body of a 28-year-old woman, tied to a large boulder, was found near a stream in a village in Manor in Palghar district on Monday. Police have filed a case of murder and abduction against an unidentified individual.
Upon identifying the victim as Sushmita Davre of Savre village, Manor police learned that her husband, Praveen, was away on a fishing boat and their two-year-old daughter was nowhere to be found.
The authorities were alerted about the body near the stream around 3.30pm. Police believe that Davre was killed at a different location and the body was later disposed of in the stream. The death is thought to have occurred early Monday morning.
The villagers only became aware of Davre's identity when police approached them for information. According to the villagers, Praveen, who worked as a labourer on a fishing boat, had been away for several days. Whenever Praveen went away, Sushmita stayed at home with their daughter. Police have questioned their relatives and are considering the possibility of a relationship gone sour.
Efforts are underway to locate the missing child. The authorities are awaiting Praveen's return to question him. He has been informed about his wife's death. Police said the autopsy report will determine the cause of Davre's death.
