NASHIK: The Nashik rural police, in the wee hours of Sunday, seized banned flavoured tobacco worth Rs 22.4 lakh that was being transported in a vehicle from the Ghoti area and arrested two people.
The superintendent of police Nashik (rural), Shahji Umap, received a tip-off about the transportation of the consignment from the Nashik region to Mumbai. Accordingly, a trap was laid on Saturday night at the toll plaza in the Ghoti area of Igatpuri taluka of the district.
As the vehicle was about to cross the toll plaza, the police spotted it and asked the driver about the contents of the truck, the movement of the goods etc. Though he refused to spell it out in the beginning, the driver then stated that the consignment of the banned flavoured tobacco was being transported to Mumbai. The police have confiscated goods worth Rs 22.4 lakh, a vehicle worth Rs 10 lakh and arrested two men, Raju Patil (31), and Sarfaraj Pasha (32).
