Patna: A youth died after a motorcycle carrying two suspected liquor smugglers crashed into a tree while they were allegedly trying to evade a police vehicle-checking drive under IIT Amhara police station area in Patna district on Tuesday.
According to police, a routine vehicle-checking drive was underway near Mithapur in Bihta when officers spotted two youths riding a motorcycle without helmets. On seeing the police, the duo allegedly tried to flee, prompting a chase. During the pursuit, the motorcycle lost control and rammed into a tree.
One of the youths died on the spot, while the other, who sustained injuries, managed to escape. Police later recovered around 40 litres of
country-made liquor from the motorcycle.
A Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team was called to the spot to collect evidence. Further investigation is underway to identify and trace the injured suspect who fled the spot.
Talking to reporters, City SP (West) Bhanu Pratap Singh said, “During a vehicle-checking drive near Mithapur, two youths riding a motorcycle without helmets appeared suspicious. On spotting the police vehicle, they attempted to flee. During the chase, their motorcycle collided with a tree. One youth died on the spot, while the other, despite being injured, managed to escape.”
The deceased was identified as Hariram Kumar, son of Devendra Kumar and a resident of Dera Tola under Ranitalab police station area. His body was sent for postmortem. Police have informed his family and are verifying his criminal antecedents.
