PUDUCHERRY: Police booked eight men and some unidentified people on charges of assaulting the driver of former MLA R Karthikeyan and damaging the windscreen of his car on Monday.
Police said Karthikeyan was returning home after visiting a temple when a gang of more than 15 people intercepted his car and threw stones at the vehicle. The gang members pulled out K Babu, 25, the driver and a assaulted him.
The gang members had reportedly planned to attack Karthikeyan but escaped as soon as people started gathering in large numbers.
The driver sustained injuries in the attack.
The windscreens of the car were damaged in stone-throwing.
Karthikeyan lodged a complaint with the Sedarapet police. Initial inquiries revealed that the most of the attackers hailed from the former MLA's native village Karasur.
Police identified eight people involved in the crime with the help of Karthikeyan and his driver.
Police maintained that the motive of the attack would be ascertained only after the arrest of the culprits involved in the crime.
The driver underwent treatment as an outpatient at a government hospital.
