Man held for murder of elderly woman
Thiruvananthapuram: Kadakkavoor police, on Monday, arrested a man in the 70-year-old woman murder case, which happened on Friday night at Keezhattingal near kadakkavoor.
The accused has been identified as Manikandan, 31, who is a resident of Melattingal. Sharada, a resident of Keezhattingal, was stabbed by an unidentified person on Friday night at the backyard of her house and later died on her way to hospital.
It was Sharada’s statement before her death that led the probe against Manikandan.
She told the neighbours, on her way to the hospital, that it was Manikandan who attacked her.
He was arrested after a probe was launched based on the statements given by the neighbours.
According to the police, the motive behind the crime was a failed rape attempt.
Manikandan, reached Sharada’s house in an inebriated state on Friday night at around 10.15 p.m. after a family function and asked her to come out.
“Sharada, who had been living alone, came out of the house without anticipating any danger as Manikandan, who is a mason, was familiar to her. He asked Sharada for drinking water and when she came out with water he caught her hand and tried to molest her. It led to a fight and when Sharada cried for help, Manikandan attacked her with a chopper and escaped,” said Kadakkavoor CI Mukesh G V, who is leading the probe.
Manikandan was taken into custody the same night.
“He denied the charges initially, but the evidences were all against him. The police sniffer dog led us to his house. Moreover we have recovered the blood-stained clothes from his house which he tried to hide. Finally, after detailed interrogation he confessed the crime,” said the police.
Manikandan has been charged with section 302 of IPC for murder and will be presented before court on Tuesday.
