Thanjavur: A 68-year-old man marked his wedding anniversary by donating land worth ₹2 crore for the construction of a permanent building for the Chozhapuram police station in Thanjavur district on Thursday.
A J Shajahan, a native of Cholapuram in Kumbakonam, donated 20,056 square feet of land to the Thanjavur police for public benefit. Shajahan handed over the registered documents to deputy superintendent of police (DSP) G K Raju of the Thiruvidaimarudhur sub-division at the Chozhapuram police station on his 45th wedding anniversary.
"We were searching for land to build the police station and had asked him to help identify a suitable location. To our surprise, he generously donated his land," DSP Raju told ToI.
Since February 12, 2021, the Chozhapuram police station has been operating out of the Chozhapuram Municipality Community Hall after its establishment under the Thiruppanandal police station. It serves 13 villages and 34 hamlets, ensuring the safety of the local population.
Shajahan, a UK-based non-resident Indian (NRI), made the donation with the future welfare of the community in mind. His contribution will enable the construction of a permanent police station to better serve the people in the Chozhapuram police limits.
In recognition of his generosity, Shajahan was honoured with a shawl and thanked by DSP Raju and other police officials.
