Heavy rains likely in parts of coastal AP till Sunday

Visakhapatnam: A fresh low-pressure area (LPA) has formed over west-central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal, off the north Andhra Pradesh-south Odisha coasts. This will trigger heavy rains at isolated places over north coastal Andhra Pradesh comprising West Godavari, East Godavari, Kakinada, Konaseema, Eluru, Anakapalle, Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram, ASR, Manyam and Srikakulam districts and few places in NTR and Krishna districts of south coastal Andhra Pradesh on Friday. Parts of the coastal Andhra Pradesh experienced heavy rains on Thursday, informed the weathermen. The heavy rains in the upper catchment areas of the Godavari led to water inflows. The water levels stood at 11.6 feet at Dowleswaram in East Godavari district at 5 pm on Thursday and more than 9.6 lakh cusecs of water was being released into the Bay of Bengal from the SAC barrage. The water level at SAC Barrage has been steadily increasing. The IMD forecast that isolated places in north coastal AP and Yanam will experience heavy rains on Saturday (Sept 7) and few parts of ASR, Manyam, Vizianagaram and Srikakulam will experience heavy rains on Sunday (Sept 8). Strong surface winds with speed 30-40 kmph are likely at isolated places over coastal Andhra Pradesh (CAP) and Rayalaseema regions from Sept 6 to 8.

Woman dies as house collapses due to heavy rain in Andhra Pradesh's Vijayawada

A house collapse in Vijayawada's Mogalrajapuram area has resulted in the death of a 24-year-old woman, triggered by heavy rainfall causing a rock to tumble from a hilltop. Rescue operations are ongoing; two women have been rescued and are stable in hospital. Authorities continue to search for two more individuals believed to be trapped under the debris.

Heavy rains lead to surge in water level of seasonal rivers

Intense late-night rains on Sunday caused a sudden surge in water levels of seasonal rivers and streams in Chamoli's Simli region, flooding over six houses and several vehicles. The district disaster management team cleared the debris by Monday evening and provided financial assistance to affected residents. All major routes are now accessible for vehicular traffic.

Andhra Pradesh CM Chandrababu Naidu directs officials to tackle flood situation amidst heavy rains

Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu held a teleconference with officials to address the flood situation in Andhra Pradesh. He emphasized inter-departmental coordination, addressed urban waterlogging and contamination issues, and advocated technology use for crisis management. Pension distribution was adjusted due to rains, and support was pledged for landslide victims' families.
