Neelam Mainral, officiating head, Department of History and Political Science and Praveen Rehman, Head of Department, History and Geography speaks on how to prepare for class X Social Science paper.
Social Science in class 10 consists of history, civics, geography and economics. Out of these history and civics consists of 35 marks each, 20 marks are for geography and 10 marks are for economics.
According to Mainral and Rehman, NCERT books should be considered as the ''Bible'' for the course of study.
Generally, NCERT books are the most authentic and going through it thoroughly can make a student secure good marks.
Only after being thorough with NCERT text books, students should consult other books. All chapters are equally important. It is only that some chapters hold more weightage than others. Avoid selective study.
All chapters should be clear and well revised. In Social Sciences, students shouldn''t think that mugging answers will help them secure good marks.
In history, the chapter on national movement is an important one and in civics, chapters on the central government and significance of fundamental rights should be revised properly. In geography, the chapters on climatic data, agricultural products and mineral production are the most important ones.
Map is the most scoring part of this subject. It should be done neatly. In the map work, physical feature and multi-purpose river valley projects are important. Students should also mark the rivers while marking the projects.
Most students don''t show the river''s course while marking the river valley projects. This makes them lose marks. Decorating maps is not a waste of time but it should be done only after one is through with all the questions in the subject and revised the answer sheet at least twice.
In Geography, answers should be accompanied by diagrams. Moreover in questions which have long answers, important points should be always underlined. Attempt all the questions.
Economics is also a scoring subject in which agriculture and industries should be done properly. In economics, taxation - both direct and indirect, fiscal policy, RBI and five year plans should be learned thoroughly.
