Morigaon Assembly Election Results 2026

Morigaon Assembly constituency is one of the 126 constituencies in the Assam Legislative Assembly, created as a new seat in the 2023 delimitation exercise. It is located in Morigaon district in central Assam and falls under the Nowgong Lok Sabha segment. Morigaon district, home to the Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, is known for its riverine landscape, paddy cultivation, and diverse communities along the south bank of the Brahmaputra. The main political parties in Assam include the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Congress, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), Bodoland People's Front (BPF), United People's Party Liberal (UPPL), and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPM). As a newly created constituency, Morigaon does not carry a direct 2021 result. The adjacent Laharighat seat in 2021 was won by Congress's Dr. Asif Mohammad Nazar with 60,932 votes over an independent by just 2,028 votes — underscoring the fiercely competitive nature of this belt. In 2026, BJP fields Rama Kanta Dewri while Congress fields Bani Kanta Das (AJP) for this new Morigaon district seat. The 2026 Assam Assembly elections will test Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's BJP-led government, which swept to power with a comfortable majority in 2021. With the opposition Congress-AIUDF combine seeking to consolidate anti-incumbency sentiment, every constituency will be a crucial battleground in deciding whether the state returns a second consecutive BJP government.
