HYDERABAD: AICC president Mallikarjun
Kharge accused BRS chief K Chandrasekhar Rao of betraying
Sonia Gandhi, who he said played a crucial role in granting statehood to Telangana. He charged
KCR with turning
Telangana into a debt-ridden state during his rule.
“Telangana statehood would not have been possible without Sonia Gandhi. The Gandhi family has been instrumental in empowering state in every aspect.
However, the current leadership in Telangana has betrayed Sonia Gandhi. These people (BRS), who once visited Sonia’s home, sought her blessings, and promised to merge their party with the
Congress, have changed their stance,” Kharge told a large gathering in Sangareddy on Sunday. Kharge said that when Telangana was formed, it was financially stable, but now it carries a debt of ₹5 lakh crore, amounting to ₹1.5 lakh debt per person in the state.
Highlighting the connections between the Gandhi family and Telangana, he said, “Not only Sonia Gandhi, but even Indira Gandhi had strong ties with Te langana people. They voted her to victory from Medak, and she played a pivotal role in establishing BHEL, BDL and Ordnance factories, among others.”
Taking a jibe at saffron party, Kharge accused the BJP of becoming the B-team of BRS. He said, “While the BJP questions what Congress accomplished in 70 years, we remind them that the Congress implemented land reforms, introduced schemes like MGNREGA, and provided education for underprivileged children. The UPA government also introduced initiatives such as NREGA, food security and health mission.” He also claimed that PM Narendra Modi’s promises of ₹15 lakh for every poor family and two crore jobs had not materialised.
Meanwhile, the second phase of the Vijayabheri bus yatra, initially scheduled in Bhuvanagiri, Jangaon, and Alair constituencies on Monday, has been cancelled for the day. The TPCC had intended to extend an invitation to Priyanka Gandhi to join the bus yatra on Monday. TPCC senior vice president Chamala Kiran Kumar Reddy said that Priyanka will participate in the bus yatra in Kollapur on Tuesday.
