A film that took seven years to complete is now ready to be screened at IFFI in Nov
Is Nirban — the Gautam Halder film starring Rakhee that has been selected for the 50th International Film Festival of India (IFFI), this year — the same movie that was originally titled Mukti? This is one of the questions doing the rounds in Tollywood after the announcement of IFFI selections.
Besides Nirban, two other Bengali films — Srijit Mukherji’s Ek Je Chhilo Raja and Kaushik Ganguly’s Jyeshthoputro — have been selected in Indian Panorama.

While the other films have already released, Gautam’s film is yet to hit
the screens.
When CT got in touch with the director, he said, “The film is based on Moti Nandi’s Bijolibalar Mukti. It was never called Mukti. Initially, we did not plan it to be a bilingual film. When we decided it to be bilingual, we named it Nirban. All I can say it is very important in today’s time.” Chaiti Ghoshal, who has acted in Nirban, also said, “I don’t know if this was called Mukti. But I am glad that the film is part of IFFI. It is one of the most important films in my life.”
According to sources, this film, despite taking long to complete, has been included in IFFI because it was censored within the stipulated time. Sources said that the film is made on a huge budget. “The shooting was completed in phases. Moreover, it took a bit more time as it is a bilingual film. The Bengali version will be screened at IFFI,” the source said.
Nirban is a film that champions communal harmony. “I don’t want to talk much about the film. All I can say it is very important in today’s time,” Gautam said.
