The fragility of human relationships is what Raja Dasgupta's debut film Choukaath, The Threshold, is all about. The film, which stars
Sreelekha Mitra, Tota Roychoudhury ,
Bidipta Chakraborty and
Saayoni Ghosh, among others, revolves around the events that follow an accident that separates happily married couple, Deboleena (Sreelekha) and Ranajay (Tota).
The couple's car meets with an accident while returning from a late-night party.
Ranajay is rescued by a TV journalist (Saayoni), but Deboleena goes missing. She returns home one day , saying that she was undergoing treatment in a hospital, though she didn't know who took her there as she was unconscious. But instead of being welcomed, everyone, including Ranajay and her office colleagues, seem to question her morality, integrity and character. That's when Deboleena decides to sever all ties with her husband. Will the impasse end? Will Ranajay and Deboleena reconcile, or will everything around them come crashing down? These are the questions the film deals with," said Raja.
Apart from the director, the lead cast of the film also spoke to CT about the film and their characters. Here's what they had to say:
Sreelekha Mitra: Deboleena is today's woman; rather, she is the voice of today's woman. She stands by what she believes in. I feel, in a way, most of us will be able to identify with her, as deep down we all are Deboleenas in some way or the other. This film is not about feminism, but it celebrates womanhood. There is a lot of ambiguity in the film where some questions are being raised for the audience to answer. How important are trust and honesty in a marriage? That's a question that will haunt the audience after watching the film. I think both are equally important. This is my first film with Rajada and it was indeed a pleasure working with him.
Tota Roychoudhury: I play Ranajay , apparently a progressive, open-minded man who loves his wife. But deep down, his male ego plays a huge role. How a minor incident triggers mistrust and slowly destroys a picture-perfect relationship is what the film is all about. Though we men claim that the male ego has taken a backseat with time, it still resurfaces during crises. While claiming to be a progressive man, Ranajay suspects his wife over a minor issue and things get really ugly. In fact, after watching the film, the audience will question the very foundations of Deboleena and Ranajay's marriage. It was a pleasure to work with Rajada and his whole team.
