While growing up on the city’s outskirts, Kolkata seemed like nothing less than a dreamland to actress Ishaa Saha. “Whenever I visited my mashir bari in Kolkata with my parents, I used to be awed by its sea of people, broad roads and bustling markets. It was like a dreamland. I was, and still am, in love with the wide boulevards around the Red Road area. I used to soak in every bit of the city’s spirit,” she said.
However, her true love affair with the city began when she got into a college in Kolkata.

“I remember sitting at Coffee House and filling up the admission form for Surendranath Law College. It was during my course there that I started discovering the city. I used to travel by launch and in no time fell in love with Baghbazar Ghat. I used to walk down from the ghat to Shyambazar. From the surreal lights at Girish Ghosh’s residence and the real-life entertainment at Star Theatre to the tram ride from Hatibagan to College Street and the magic of Rajballav Para — everything seemed absolutely magical,” Ishaa told us.

The actress is also a selfproclaimed foodie. “Ever since my initial love affair with the city began in north Kolkata, I left no stone unturned to explore the varied tastes from all corners of the city. From telebhaja at a small shack bang opposite Girish Mancha to Paramounter sherbet to Golbarir kosha mangsho and Netaji’s peyanji in Hedua — Kolkata is a heaven for foodies like me,” Ishaa confessed. But it is the old-world charm of the city that intrigues her the most. “Look at those old buildings and colonial structures — how can one not be fascinated?” Ishaa asked.
The actress wasn’t introduced to the southern part of the city until she began working. “South Kolkata is more posh and sophisticated. Initially, it appeared a foreign land and it took me some time to feel connected with that side of the city. Now that I come to south Kolkata almost every day for work, I’m in love with this area as well. I’m especially fond of the Dhakuria lake area. If, like my other friends, I shift down south, I’ll make it a point to take a stroll around the lake every day. Piyadi (Anupam Roy’s wife) and I have already discussed that,” Ishaa added with a smile.
