A first-time stage adaptation of Nashtanirh will have Jaya Seal Ghosh return to theatre
Come May 2 and Jaya Seal Ghosh will begin shooting for Katakuti, where she will be playing a doctor. While films remain her calling, the actor is not playing knots and crosses with her other passion theatre. The actor is keen to tread the boards again and will assuredly balance it with screen and family life.
It all started with her tryst with a programme called Kobitascope.

That rekindled the passion for theatre in me. I am an NSD graduate and always had the thirst for doing theatre. Today, I recall how Naseeruddin Shah had conducted an acting workshop for us at NSD. During those days, I was very shy and introvert and known more as a good looking girl. It was only after this workshop, where I had improvised a portion with my classmate (Dibyendu Bhattacharya), that the whole institute started taking me seriously as an actor. Seeing my performance, Naseer Sir had then said: She is a genuine actor, she recalls.
And now, talks are on for her to be a part of Goutam Halders stage adaptation of Rabindranath Tagores Nashtanirh a Bengali novella that had been earlier adapted by Satyajit Ray on celluloid as Charulata. While Dulal Lahiri is supposed to essay the role of Bhupati, Jaya Seal Ghosh will play Charu. Essaying the role of Amal will be Samadarshi Dutta.
Says Jaya, This is the first time that Nashtanirh is being adapted for stage. I consider myself to be extremely privileged for having got this opportunity to play Charu. Incidentally, Goutamda has planned the play in such a way that it will merge both theatre and celluloid in it. Portions of the adaptation will be shot by cinematographer-turned-director Abhik Mukhopadhyay and those will be screened as an interpolation in the stage adaptation.

So, what about any fears of comparisons with the way Soumitra Chattopadhyay and Madhabi Mukhopadhyay had played the role in the Ray film? Incidentally, Soumitra Chattopadhyay will be essaying the role of a sutradhar in this production. While I have watched Charulata, I have been asked not to watch it now. I have very high regards for Madhabi Mukhopadhyay. I have always believed that if I succumb to fear, I will never be able to spread my wings. Fear isnt the key. I shall give my very best to this production, Jaya insists.
If things go as planned, the production will be staged on June 26.
