Kaushik Ganguly’s Chaya O Chobi is a love story that revolves around the life of Maya — an Indian brought up in London who comes to Darjeeling to shoot her first Bengali film. It’s a smooth run for Maya till the day her film’s female lead, Rai, becomes untraceable. Even her fiancé, the film’s male lead, Arindam, is clueless about her whereabouts. Rai, on the other hand, ends up in a secluded jungle resort, with only her driver, Jeetu, for company.
The remainder of the film is about whether Maya’s film crew survives the circumstances that follow. “We did the casting keeping the actor’s profile in mind. For instance, Koel, who plays superstar Rai Chatterjee — an ordinary woman at heart — is much like her in real life,” the director told us.
Nispal Singh, the film’s producer, told us, “Given the fact that Darjeeling is going through such bad times, Chaya O Chobi will take the audience to the Queen of Hills through a love story. I’m sure the audience will love this journey.”
CT also spoke to the cast about their characters. Here’s what they told us.Koel Mallick: Rai is a superstar with a lot of layers in her character. The world thinks she is temperamental, whimsical and rude, but there’s another side to her. She shows her vulnerability only to her fiance, Arindam, with whom she shares a beautiful relationship.
Ritwick Chakraborty: Jeetu is Rai’s personal driver and the local coordinator. He’s her diehard fan and a bit flamboyant by nature.
Abir Chatterjee:Arindam is a well-known star — a perfect man both in reel and real life, who’s chilled out, caring, confident, practical, rational, witty and focused. He almost seems larger than life at times.
Priyanka Sarkar: Mou is a wannabe actress, who’s ambitious and happy to be part of Maya’s film along with superstars like Rai and Arindam. She looks up to Rai and wants be like her personally and professionally.
Churni Ganguly : Maya is a filmmaker who’s crazy in her own way; a lost creature. She can also foresee the whole story happening around her.
