For any actor, playing an unhinged character is always a challenge. But the situation becomes even more dynamic when the actor is offered a role which has no dialogues. Its just the eyes and the body language that have to convey the emotions to the audience.

Thats why Rupa Bhattacharjee, who plays a character called Pagli in Sayantan Chatterjees Antar, is extremely charged up about the film.
Says Rupa, Bengali cinema has reached a very interesting phase. A varied range of subjects are now being explored even in movies that are made on a budget of 50 lakh to 60 lakh. When I was offered the role of Pagli, it came as a challenge for me. In most movies, a mad womans character is usually kept either as a comic relief or to add spice to the movie. The reason for the presence of a lunatic in most Bengali movies is to add colour. Interestingly, Sayantandas movie doesnt do that. It is set in a jail where there are two cells for inmates of two genders. Apart from me, the film also has Roopa Ganguly, Dolon Roy, Asish Vidyarthi, among others. My character is unhinged but doesnt ever utter a word. Instead, she paints whatever she feels. In one scene, she also revolts against the corruption in the system. It was tough for me to pull off this role but I got immense help from Rudrada and Paramda (actorturned-producers Rudranil Ghosh and Parambrata Chattopadhyay) on the sets. They have been very inspiring for everyone of us on the sets.
The first schedule of this movie is over and Rupa is now looking forward to her shoot in January. Incidentally, shooting for another important film of mine Nimantran based on Taslima Nasreens work will also begin then. I have been doing workshops and the toughest part was the workshop that is preparing me for a gangrape scene. For over three hours, I was subjected to verbal abuse by director Sourav Dey to make me realize what a woman goes through emotionally when she is raped. At the end of the workshop, I told my director that the day I shoot the gangrape scene, I will have to take a days off after that. Shooting for the movie will begin in January since we are still finalizing on the main cast (which might have national stars). Meanwhile, Rupa is also set for the release of Ratul Gangulys film titled 10th July. In that movie, I have a lip-lock with Kanchana Moitra. I dont believe in inhibitions. I am here to do good cinema and will give all my best to the roles that come by. In the pipeline, is a role offered to me by Bappaditya Bandopadhyay. I have been told that the character is inspired by a Hemen Majumdar painting. Needless to say, I am looking forward it too, she signs off.
