A group of students is currently on a hunger strike at the Calcutta Medical College as they demand more transparency while allotting hostel seats. These students have already received support from people belonging to different strata of the society. Even eminent personalities from the Bengali film and television industry have raised their voice.
While speaking about the indefinite strike, Tollywood legend
Soumitra Chatterjee said, “The hunger strike from the medical students is justified.
But the sad part is nobody from the administration has spoken to them. It’s inhuman. Those young students’ health conditions are deteriorating rapidly. The government has to speak to them. The whole problem can be sorted out if positive talks are there. We have to do something to stop the students from killing themselves.”
Since June 27, Calcutta Medical College and Hospital has seen repeated protests from the second, third, fourth and final year students. They want transparency in the ongoing hostel allotments as a number of students didn’t get hostel rooms while illegal allotments are reportedly being carried out.
