From “Fight, Koni fight,” in Koni, “Bandar Bachcha” in Jhinder Bondi to his dance moves on the song Ke Tumi Nandini in Teen Bhubaner Pare —
Soumitra Chatterjee created innumerable magic moments on the big screen. We asked
Subhrajit Mitra to tell us about their favourite screen moments from the legend’s oeuvre. Here’s what he said…
If I have to mention one character played by Soumitra Chatterjee that influenced me most, it would definitely be Apu from Apur Sansar.
I have some deep-rooted personal bonds with the character that influenced me to direct a film later on in life. The simplicity, coming-of-age of the character was so brilliantly portrayed by Soumitra kaku in his debut film itself, is etched on my mind. Also, the last scene in the film stands out. Needless to say, Soumitra kaku as the suave and adventurous detective, Feluda, lives in every Bengali's heart. The character of Mayurbahan, which he portrayed in Jhinder Bondi, is just brilliant. I think it is one of the best villainous characters ever portrayed in the history of Bengali cinema. He looked royal.
