Subhrajit Mitra is set to embark on an ambitious new Bengali film titled
Mayamrigaya, conceived as a lyrical and philosophical exploration of love, conflict, and human longing. Inspired by
Rabindranath Tagore’s classic novel
Dui Bon, the film delves into the timeless dilemma of whether a single relationship can hold contrasting emotions—refuge and desire, maternal warmth and romantic yearning, stability and restlessness—at once.
Mitra describes the project as “an inquiry rather than a narrative,” where history is not merely a backdrop but a living presence. The film situates personal relationships against the sweeping currents of the freedom movement and social transformation, weaving public change and private emotion into one seamless continuum. In
Mayamrigaya, there are no heroes or villains—only human beings shaped by contradiction, truth, and yearning.
The film will be presented entirely in black and white, enhancing its period texture and emotional depth. Mitra himself has helmed the research, screenplay, dialogue, production design, and direction, with the project designed as a musical magnum opus in collaboration with acclaimed composer
Bickram Ghosh. Together, the team hopes to create a cinematic experience that reimagines Tagore’s enduring themes for a contemporary audience.
