Based on a mysterious character from a short story by Bibhutibhushan and taken forward by his son Taradas Bandyopadhyay through two novels the upcoming film will surely be filled with surprises. The character of Taranath Tantrik was also reimagined for a series of graphic novels by Shamik Dasgupta earlier and the story dwells on the fringes of the society and a dark art practitioner’s way of fighting evil forces larking in the dark.
If all goes according to plan, the film will be shot from January next year and it is expected to be released in theatres during summer 2023.
According to the literary works, Taranath Tantrik lives with his daughter Chari in an old house at Mott lane in central Kolkata after having lost most of his supernatural powers because of misuse of Tantra. He is now an astrologer by profession and but in his earlier life he had many encounters with the supernatural forces in his extensive travels across Bengal.

In 1940, Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay created the character Taranath but he wrote only two short stories featuring this character and much of Taranath’s life is displayed prominently through these stories. The rest of the stories featuring Taranath Tantrik are written by his son Taradas Bandyopadhyay in two popular books ‘Taranath Tantrik’ (1985) and ‘Olatchokro’ (2003).
