It’s been 38 years since
Uttam Kumar breathed his last on July 24, 1980. No doubt there have been many successful stars since then, but if there was ever a Mahanayak in the truest sense of the word in Bengali film industry, it’s Uttam Kumar. In fact, just like media coined the famous term ‘superstar’ for
Rajesh Khanna, Uttam Kumar came to be known as ‘Mahanayak’ in Bengal.
On his 38th death anniversary, much like millions of Uttam fans, Tollywood celebs are also paying their homage to the matinee idol of Bengali cinema.
Paying tribute to the legend, actor
Tota Roy Chowdhury tweeted, “Tumi nei Tobuo tumi achho Shilpo jotodin achhe Hridoy jotodin achhe Baangalee jotodin achhe..... Soshroddho Pronaam Sri #UttomKumar”
Actress Sayantika Banerjee took to her Twitter handle to write, “My sincere homage to the legend of Bengali Cinema, Mahanayak Uttam Kumar on his Death Anniversary.”
Prosenjit Chatterjee too paid his tribute to Uttam Kumar.
Born as Arun Kumar Chatterjee on September 3, 1926, in Kolkata, Uttam Kumar made his debut in
Nitin Bose’s ‘Dristidan’, way back in 1948. It enjoyed a moderate success. Almost 4 decades and 212 films later he emerged as the undisputed king of Bengali cinema.
