Bengal’s music fraternity had strongly reacted when the Padma controversy made headlines last month after
Sandhya Mukhopadhyay rejected the Padma Shri award from the central government. But little did anyone know that within a month they will be hearing the tragic news of the veteran singer’s death.
As the news of Sandhya Mukhopadhyay’s demise broke out on Tuesday evening not the music fraternity but every single music lover in Bengal was left in shock.
Social media was flooded with messages and tributes for the iconic singer.
A saddened
Srijit Mukherji took to his Twitter handle and wrote:
Raj Chakraborty wrote, "Legend Sandhya Mukherjee's demise has brought upon a dark day on Bengal. She'll forever be treasured in the hearts of her admirers. May her soul rest in peace.."
Music director Indraadip Das Gupta tweeted:
Sandhya Mukhopadhyay was often called the last of the singers from Bengal’s golden age of modern music. Legends like Hemanta Mukhopadhyay, Manna Dey, Shyamal Mitra, Manabendra Bondopadhyay and others have all passed away.
When the veteran singer rejected the Padma award last month many had pointed out that central government's decision to confer her Padma Shri after all these years was a rude jolt to the 90-year-old icon who has been an inspiration to singers of different generations.
Sandhya, born and brought up in Kolkata, started taking her music lessons from A T Kannan and Chinmoy Lahiri before she trained under the legendary Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan.
