Veteran actress Basabi Nandi passes away at 82
Veteran Bengali actress Basabi Nandi has passed away after suffering a massive cardiac arrest. She was 82.
Nandi was one of the finest actresses of the 60s.
She started her acting career in Bengali theatre and then went on to deliver many hit films. Not only an actor, she was also a renowned singer and even had a number of singles to her credit.
She almost single-handedly made plays such as ‘Karagaar’, ‘Same-Side’ and ‘Srimati Bhyanakari’ instant hits during the early days of her career.

Basabi Nandi made her film debut with the Bengali cult classic ‘Jamalaye Jibanta Manush’ (1958). Directed by Prafulla Chakraborty, the superhit comedy had an ensemble cast including Bhanu Banerjee, Chhabi Biswas, Pahari Sanyal, Kamal Mitra and Tulsi Chakraborty in pivotal roles. Her captivating performance in ‘Bon Palashir Padabali’ (1973) opposite Uttam Kumar is still remembered by movie buffs. Directed by Uttam Kumar, the film became a blockbuster.
The versatile actress appeared in several other hit films such as ‘Baghini’ (1968), ‘Aami Se O Sakha’ (1975) and others.
