Rabindrasangeet at a nightclub could raise a few eyebrows, but music lovers in Kolkata celebrated Tagore’s birth anniversary in style and how! Elocutionist Sujoy Prosad Chatterjee and singer Neepabithi Ghosh came together recently at a city pub for Tagore on the Highway — a concert of world music and Rabindransangeet. Bolero, hip hop, waltz, blues, country and many other genres were explored with songs like
More bhabonaare ki haway, Graamchaara ei ranga maatir poth, Megher kole rod and many more.
The high point of the evening was Neepabithi’s rendition of
Yesterday once more topped with
Purano shei diner katha. As the concert progressed, Neepabithi had the audience dancing to Assamese and Goan folk music woven into Tagore’s songs. Guests were seen enjoying their share of drinks, as they lapped up all the good music. “Tagore on the Highway is a concert where Rabindrasangeet meets world music,” said Sujoy. Echoing his thoughts, Neepabithi said, “This concert was a way to reach out to the youth who, otherwise, would listen to Rabindrasangeet in a remixed version.”
