JU students’ street play on azadi

Drama Club (JUDC), the official drama club of the coveted university, recently performed a street play titled Azadi on the campus premises. The sociopolitical drama was performed right in front of the World View centre.
Around 10 students from the drama club rehearsed the play for months before the final performance. The first show of Azadi was held in January at a festival in Bangalore. The play sends out a powerful message revolving around the meaning of ‘azadi’. “India got its independence more than 70 years ago. After all these years, what does freedom mean to us? How do we perceive it? I have tried to ask these important questions in this play,” said Anushka Ghatak, a third-year student of history, who has written the script of the play .
Talking about their drama club, Anushka said that when she joined the university, the club wasn’t much active. “In the last three years, we've staged a number of plays, including And Indrajit in Today's Society, I2- Inequality and Ignorance, Joy

and Aadorsho Chhele, among others. Some of these plays have won several awards at state- as well as national-level competitions. Our teamwork accomplished Uttaran 2012, a state-level theatre festival organised by JUDC,” she added.
The drama club has won several awards too. They were one of the runners-up in a popular music channel’s fest in 2014. In 2013, they were a finalist at Spring Fest, a champion in FETSU’s Sanskriti, a champion in Eclycia and a runner-up at XIMB’s Xpressions.
