Angelina Jolie reveals why her double mastectomy scars remind her of her kids
Angelina Jolie recently got real about her double mastectomy scars. The ‘Maria’ actress shared that for her, they're way more than just marks left by surgery. They’re reminders of her kids, her choices, and everything that really matters to her as a mom. In a new interview, she talked honestly about what those scars mean, how her family shapes her, and why she decided to share her story in the first place.

Back in 2013, Jolie found out she carried the BRCA1 gene mutation. Doctors told her she had up to an 87% chance of developing breast cancer. So, she made a tough call and went ahead to have a preventative double mastectomy. The reason behind this life-altering decision? Jolie revealed that she wanted to stick around for her children. In her words, her scars aren’t something to hide or feel bad about. They’re proof she made a choice for her family. In a recent interview with French radio station France Inter, Jolie said, "I've always been someone more interested in the scars and the life that people carry," adding, "I'm not drawn to some perfect idea of a life that has no scars."

For her, every scar means strength. It means making a hard choice out of love.
She looks at her scars and remembers why she did it — to be there for her kids, to give them as much time with their mom as possible.Jolie previously shared that losing her own mother, Marcheline Bertrand, to cancer shaped everything. Jolie was still young when her mom died at 56 in 2007. That great loss stuck with her, and it t pushed her to do anything she could to avoid the same fate, to make sure she could watch her own children grow up. That’s why Jolie shared that her mastectomy scars will always serve as reminders of the "choice I made to do what I could do to stay here as long as I could with my children."The Hollywood star also chose to remove her ovaries and fallopian tubes because of her family’s history and the risk of ovarian cancer — again, all for her kids.Jolie didn’t pretend her life had been tidy, either. "[If] you get to the end of your life and you haven't made mistakes, you haven't made a mess, you don't have scars, you haven't lived a full enough life," she said, per E! News. The ‘Eternals’ actress first showed her mastectomy scars in a Time France photo shoot in December 2025, saying, "I share these scars with many women I love." She continued, "I'm always moved when I see other women share theirs. I wanted to join them."Jolie has also been clear about why she went public in the first place. In her famous New York Times op-ed that came out in 2013, she wrote about her preventative surgery to help other women feel informed and empowered. “Every woman should get to decide her own healthcare journey and have the information she needs,” Jolie said. “Healthcare decisions have to be personal, and women need support and real facts to make those choices.

Now in her 50s, Jolie is the mom of six: Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh, and twins Knox and Vivienne. She shares them with her ex-husband, Brad Pitt. The former power couple of Hollywood has moved on from their marriage, but the kids are still at the center of everything Angelina does.Even though she’s one of the most famous people on the planet, Jolie keeps her children’s lives “very private.” She says they’re not interested in acting, despite her Hollywood career. They like to keep things low-key, and she respects that. While talking to ‘Good Morning America’ in 2024, the ‘Salt’ actress made it clear that nothing matters to her more than being a mother.
