Director Gareth Edwards reveals big plans for Jurassic World: rebirth and beyond

Gareth Edwards, the director of Jurassic World: Rebirth, has shared exciting details about his vision for the next chapter of the Jurassic Park franchise. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Edwards explained that he wants to take the series "back to basics" and hopes the new film will mark the beginning of a fresh trilogy.
Although Universal Pictures hasn’t officially confirmed plans for another trilogy, Edwards expressed his belief that Rebirth feels like the start of a new era. The movie is scheduled for release on July 2, 2025, and Edwards hopes it will evoke the magic of Steven Spielberg’s earlier works, which made the original films so iconic.
Edwards described the film as a tribute to Spielberg, referencing moments in Rebirth that remind him of classics like Jaws. He called the movie a "love letter" to Spielberg’s filmmaking style, blending suspense, adventure, and survival in what he describes as a "little adventure odyssey across an island."
Set five years after Jurassic World: Dominion, the story follows dinosaurs that have escaped into the wild and are struggling to adapt to Earth’s current climate. The action takes place on an equatorial island chain where these dinosaurs have found refuge. The plot revolves around a mission to retrieve the DNA of three specific dinosaurs that could lead to a groundbreaking pharmaceutical discovery.
The mission is led by Zora Bennet, a covert ops expert played by Scarlett Johansson, alongside team leader Duncan Kincaid (Mahershala Ali) and paleontologist Henry Loomis (Jonathan Bailey). They are joined by pharmaceutical representative Martin Krebs (Rupert Friend), and their adventure brings unexpected encounters with shipwreck survivors.
Edwards acknowledged the challenges the franchise faces after mixed reviews and declining box office numbers for the previous trilogy. However, he believes the key to success lies in recapturing the suspense and awe of the original Jurassic Park. By using fewer visual effects and focusing on storytelling techniques that build tension, Edwards aims to deliver an experience that brings audiences back to the edge of their seats.
