Jim Curtis shares how he and Jennifer Anniston navigate relationship conflict, ‘It is important to set ground rules’

Jim Curtis explained how minor issues arise in their time together. He said, “I spend a lot of time with my girlfriend. We spend a lot of time in the house together. Sometimes, we can have little things flare up.” He outlined options for response, noting, “We have the choice to remain silent, feel upset, or we could leave the house, reflect on it, and contemplate how to improve the situation. Alternatively, we can approach it by saying, ‘Hey, this is what transpired, I apologize,’ and work on repairing it, ensuring that such issues are minimized or avoided in the future.”

Mutual self-work required

Jim Curtis stressed individual responsibility in partnerships. He remarked, “We both have to work on ourselves. I can’t fix you, you can’t fix me. But we have to at least be in agreement, ‘This is gonna happen when we have this discussion.’” (Ced with Intention podcast) He added, “There has to be some understanding. We both need to focus on our personal growth.”

The couple discusses strategies ahead of time. Jim Curtis shared, “We’ve had conversations where we address potential issues beforehand. ‘In this scenario, do you require some time? Do you need ten minutes alone to contemplate, or do you prefer to dive into it right away? Is it acceptable if we sleep on it, or are you someone who finds it extremely difficult to go to bed upset?’”

He continued, “In a romantic relationship, it’s essential to establish the ground rules for the dynamics we are navigating.” (Ced with Intention podcast) Jim Curtis also noted, “Or we can say, ‘Hey, this is what happened, I’m sorry,’ and do the repair, and then go and work on making sure it happens less or doesn’t happen again. Because once you make a repair and it just happens five more times, no one trusts”
