Oscar nominations: Timothee Chalamet, Emma Stone, 'Sinners' and more shatter records at Academy Awards

The 98th Academy Awards is shaping up to be one for the history books. The Oscar nominations announced on Thursday, didn’t just turn the spotlight onto the year’s most celebrated films and performances but also rewrote long-standing records, with young talents scoring big, and films pushing boundaries.

Timothee Chalamet earns third Oscar nom

Timothee Chalamet, Emma Stone and Ryan Coogler's 'Sinners' kicked off the night on a record-breaking note. At 30-years-old Chalamet, earned his third nomination for Best Actor for his turn in 'Marty Supreme'. This made him the youngest actor since Marlon Brando in 1954 to receive three acting nominations. He also extended his record of starring in eight films with Best Picture nominations. He is also the youngest performer ever nominated for acting and producing in the same year.




Should Chalamet take home the Best Actor statuette, he would become the second-youngest winner, second to only Adrien Brody, who was 29 when he won his first Oscar.

Emma Stone earns seventh Oscar nomination

Matching Chalamet’s dual nominations for the night was Emma Stone, whose nominations for Best Actress and Best Picture for 'Bugonia' further helped her hit a new record at the awards show. At just 37, Stone has now scored seven Oscar nominations, surpassing a record previously held by Meryl Streep, who hit the milestone at 38.

The actress, who is also a two-time Oscar winner for 'La La Land' and 'Poor Things', could also add her name to the record books, as a third Best Actress win would see her tie Frances McDormand and trail only behind Katharine Hepburn’s record of four wins.

'Sinners' creates history with 16 nominations

'Sinners' became the most-nominated film in Academy Awards history, racking up 16 nominations and surpassing the long-standing record of 14 held by 'All About Eve', 'Titanic' and 'La La Land'.

Ruth E Carter becomes most nominated Black woman

Besides the film, legendary costume designer Ruth E. Carter, received her fifth Oscar nomination, the most ever for a Black woman across all Academy Award categories.

Wagner Moura first Brazilian to score Best Actor nomination

Wagner Moura earned his first Oscar nod for Best Actor for 'The Secret Agent', becoming the first Brazilian actor ever nominated in the category. This nomination follows his Golden Globe win.

Stellan Skarsgard scores nomination for International Film

Meanwhile, Stellan Skarsgard made history as the first performer nominated for Best Supporting Actor for an International Film. Co-star Elle Fanning also scored a nomination for Best Supporting Actress.
