Stars who left Hollywood after tasting fame: Ian Somerhalder, Leelee Sobieski, and more
Several Hollywood stars have stepped away from the limelight for personal reasons. Ian Somerhalder now champions climate change, Christina Milian relocated to Paris for her family, Evangeline Lilly embraced a new chapter, and Leelee Sobieski prioritized motherhood over acting, finding fulfillment beyond the cameras.
Fame, fortune, and a guaranteed spotlight, and yet some of Hollywood's most recognisable faces chose to walk away from all of it. Some left for their families, some for a calling bigger than any role, and some simply because the joy of it had quietly faded. Here is what happened when the cameras stopped rolling.

Ian Somerhalder

The man who made Damon Salvatore one of television's most beloved vampires has firmly traded the screen for something far more grounded. 'The Vampire Diaries' alum has not taken on a new role since Netflix's 2019 series 'V-Wars', choosing instead to pour his energy into combating climate change through regenerative farming and improving the world's soil. Talking to E! News in November 2023, he laid out his future plainly: "I will be a rancher and building legacy brands, whether it's my bourbon or my health and wellness company, and the regenerative agriculture and healthy soil management practices that I live by." When people ask why he cares so deeply, his answer cuts right to it: "That's who I am, that's what I'm going to become."

Christina Milian

From Hollywood to Paris, the singer and actress best known for her roles in 'Bring It On: All or Nothing', 'Be Cool', and the holiday series 'Falling Inn Love' made a decision that most people only dream about. Married to French singer Matt Pokora, the couple had spent three to four years commuting every six months before finally making the move permanent so their kids could study in France.
On 'The Jennifer Hudson Show' in November 2024, she said "My husband is French, and we've been together for over seven or eight years, and what better opportunity than that?" And speaking to E! in December 2024, she summed up the new rhythm of her life simply: "My kids are happy there. They know French. We go to the park. Then at night time, I do my work because I work hours ahead. It's a nice, healthy balance for me."

Evangeline Lilly

The 'Ant-Man and the Wasp' star announced an indefinite hiatus from acting in June 2024 after two decades in the industry, and did so with a rare sense of peace rather than frustration. Writing on Instagram, she said, "I am so filled with joy and contentment today as I live out my vision. Stepping away from what seems like the obvious choice can feel scary at times, but stepping into your dharma replaces the fear with fulfillment. I might return to Hollywood one day, but, for now, this is where I belong. A new season has arrived, and I am ready, and I am happy." For someone walking away from one of the biggest franchises in the world, she made it look remarkably easy.

Leelee Sobieski

The 'Never Been Kissed' star, who also appeared in films like 'Here on Earth' and 'The Glass House', began stepping back from acting after her marriage to fashion designer Adam Kimmel in 2010, citing discomfort with the intimacy demanded by most roles and telling Vogue: "Ninety percent of acting roles involve so much sexual stuff with other people, and I don't want to do that." The arrival of her second child in 2014 made the decision final, and by 2016, she was telling Us Weekly, "I don't do movie stuff anymore. I am totally an outsider. I am just a mom and an outsider. I am just focused on my kids. I think that's mainly why I stopped."
