Universal Pictures has addressed rumors circulating online about a supposed pay gap between Wicked stars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo. The studio confirmed that both actresses received equal pay for their roles in the highly anticipated movie adaptation of the beloved Broadway musical.
Speculation about unequal pay began on Reddit, where posts claimed that Grande earned $15 million for playing Glinda, the Good Witch, while Erivo, who portrayed Elphaba, the Wicked Witch, was paid just $1 million. Responding to these claims, a Universal spokesperson called the reports false and dismissed them as "internet fodder." The studio clarified that both stars were compensated equally for their work. Another source connected to the production backed this statement, confirming that Grande and Erivo’s paychecks were the same.
The actresses, who share the screen in this two-part film adaptation directed by Jon M. Chu, spoke about the bond they developed during production. In an interview with Deadline, Cynthia Erivo revealed that the two first connected during a five-hour meeting at her home, followed by a vocal session at the director’s house. Both stars emphasized the importance of mutual support and honesty throughout their collaboration, with Erivo describing their efforts to build a strong friendship.
Wicked has already achieved significant box office success, earning $112.5 million domestically in its opening weekend and setting a new November Monday record with $15.8 million. Globally, the film has grossed approximately $180 million. Despite competition from Disney’s Moana 2, which is predicted to dominate the Thanksgiving weekend, Wicked remains a standout performer, with an estimated five-day total of $90 million.
The production, which cost $320 million before marketing, has made history as the highest-opening Broadway musical adaptation. Its massive popularity among female audiences—who make up 70% of viewers—continues to highlight its cultural impact.
