Will Smith didn’t make an appearance at the Golden Globe Awards but he was remembered by a few, mainly for his slapgate at the Academy Awards last year.
Host Jerrod Carmichael called out Will Smith’s slapgate against Chris Rock and stated, “While we were on commercial, we actually presented Will Smith with the Rock Hudson award for best portrayal of masculinity on television.” And Eddie Murphy, who received the Cecil B. DeMille award for lifetime achievement, made a reference to Smith's outburst in his acceptance speech. The veteran actor said, "There is a definitive blueprint that you can follow to achieve success, prosperity, longevity, and peace of mind. There's three things: Pay your taxes, mind your business, and keep Will Smith's wife's name out of your f*****g mouth."
Last year, in a brief monologue, Chris Rock joked about Smith’s wife Pinkett Smith's shaved head and compared it to Demi Moore's dramatic look in the 1997 film ‘GI Jane’. Pinkett has been suffering from alopecia, which leads to hair loss and this dig didn’t go down well with Will Smith, who walked up to the stage and slapped Chris. Following the incident, Smith apologised to Chris and resigned from his membership of the Academy, he has also been banned from attending Academy events for 10 years.
