Story: Brooklyn starlet Izzy narrates her call girl-to-actress story in an interview and how a night with one of her clients gave her a magical lesson in chasing her dreams.

Review: She's Funny That Way is a charming little film which benefits from its quaint milieu. Peter Bogdanovich weaves in the element of simplicity and affability, characteristics conspicuous to him, traces of which we saw 43 years ago in his most memorable movie What's up, Doc?

movie

His romantic principles are still the same and he inevitably laces the narrative with equal measures of vibrance and dreaminess. His deftness with the genre of screwball comedy helps him conjure up a genuinely funny tale about a New York call girl’s escapades and how her romantically dissatisfied clients create comic havoc.

Broadway director Arnold, played by Owen Wilson, is on a perennial mission of rescuing women. He is both lecherous and a hopeless romantic, who quotes Ernst Lubitsch's Cluny Brown philosophy, "Some people like to feed nuts to the squirrels but if someone wants to feed squirrels to the nuts who am I to say nuts to the squirrels." If you are romantic, this follow-your-heart mantra will win you over.

However, the basic problem with the story’s characters is that they never form a bond with you. Escorts turn into actresses, married people regularly cheat on their spouses but all of this hardly affects the audience. This isn’t the kind of movie that will bring the house down with laughter and hence, the flaws, that it lacks depth and visual finesse, become noticeable. With infectious mirth to its aid, the movie scrapes through with minimal gags. There is a severe dearth of coherence in this dated narrative, which is a glaring shortcoming. But the film provides for some precious, perky fun.

Wilson is crackling and Jennifer Aniston, as the snappy shrink, is terrific. Imogen Poots does justice to the material at hand.

As Bogdanovich takes us for a carousel trip after 13 years, it is heartening to lay back and let the frothy amusing chaos entertain you.
