Justin Timberlake’s year-long battle over his DWI arrest body cam footage has reached a turning point that feels like both closure and compromise for the pop icon. What started as a late-night drive gone wrong in the Hamptons last summer spiraled into a high-stakes legal standoff, pitting a celebrity’s quest for privacy against the public’s right to transparency. Fans watched as Timberlake, the smooth-voiced heartthrob behind hits like ‘Cry Me a River’ and ‘Mirrors,” navigated sobriety tests on grainy video, faced courtrooms, and fought to keep raw police footage under wraps.

Behind the settlement

Justin Timberlake reached a settlement with the Sag Harbor Village Police Department for the release of redacted body cam footage from his June 2024 DWI arrest. A source exclusively tells PEOPLE that Timberlake saw this as “the best alternative” to continuing the fight against its publication. The insider explains, “He tried to keep it sealed, but when the [option] came up to keep some of it private, that seemed to be the best alternative.” The source adds that Timberlake “hopes this release puts a final nod to all of it.” This agreement allowed for a version of the footage that “does not constitute an unwarranted invasion of personal privacy,” according to court documents from his earlier petition. Timberlake, known for guarding his personal life, remains “a very private guy when it comes to his personal life,” the source notes.

The arrest details

The incident unfolded on June 18, 2024, when Timberlake was pulled over in Sag Harbor, New York, after allegedly running a stop sign and failing to stay in his lane. In the footage, first released by TMZ, the singer tells officers, “Guys, I’m just following my friends back to my house.” He admits to having “consumed one martini” and points out he was driving a rental car. During field sobriety tests, Timberlake struggles and remarks, “These are, like, really hard tests.” Officers note the smell of alcohol and place him under arrest for DWI. His lawyer, Edward Burke Jr., had maintained that Timberlake was “not intoxicated” at the time.

Legal journey

Timberlake was initially charged with one count of driving while intoxicated, plus citations for traffic violationsIn September 2024, he pleaded guilty to a lesser offense of driving while impaired as part of a plea deal. Earlier this year, he filed a petition to block the footage release, warning it “would cause severe and irreparable harm to [Timberlake’s] personal and professional reputation” and lead to “public ridicule and harassment.” Despite these efforts, the redacted video spanning over 21 minutes became public on March 20, 2026. The full body cam material runs roughly eight hours, capturing the stop and precinct interactions.
