The sequel bug that caught on the Punjabi industry some years ago, is set to intensify its march in 2018. A trend borrowed heavily from Bollywood and Hollywood, besides sequels even threequels are on the anvil for the industry, making this a year for Punjabi film installments.
This year will see
Mr & Mrs 420 Returns, Manje Bistre 2, Rocky Mental
(to be titled
Mental Returns
),
Nikka Zaildar 3, Mitti 2, Sikander 2
along with the third part of
Rupinder Gandhi…
series.
While the shooting of
Carry On Jatta 2 has wrapped up,
sequels to first installment of films that haven’t even released yet, are also being planned. Case in point is the yet-to-release film
Asees
by actor turned director Rana Ranbir.

Manje Bistre 2 is set to release this year
Says Rana, “Remake/sequel is a big trend across all the industries, particularly Bollywood and Hollywood. Since Punjabi industry is growing, I feel it’s good that we are not shying away from taking to new concepts.
Asees 2
is already on my mind.”
The director of Parmish Verma starrer
Rocky Mental
Vikram Thori has planned
Mental Returns
as the sequel. “The plot will be different. There are chances that star cast is changed. I plan a
Mental
sequel for 2018 as I don’t want to leave any room for monotony in the storyline,” he says adding, “There is huge effort in creating strong and engaging storyline, but with sequels you know the target. The actors even know how a character has to proceed, taking cue from the last part. I favour sequels.”
Says Smeep Kang who is making
Carry on Jatta 2,
“A director’s constant effort is to make the second part better. While first one is the base, the second one is like a parallel foundation, also to be laid with great care. The trend of sequel has the ability to do well.” Vindu Dara Singh is working on a sequel of 2014
Gippy Grewal starrer
Jatt James Bond
. Actor Dev Kharoud, who played lead in
Rupinder Gandhi The Gangster..?
and
Rupinder Gandhi 2 The Robinhood
confirmed that the third installment will be out soon. "There have been occasions in Bollywood when second films have bombed, but it’s not a deterrent. Social media is playing a big role. While a movie in cinema will be considered flop, at movie sharing site it can turn out to be a super duper hit.”
