In celebration of the Black History Month, students and history enthusiasts have been making their way to the American Center in the capital. A multimedia exhibition, “Journeys Toward Freedom”, being held there, documents the 1959 visit of Dr Martin Luther King Jr to India. The exhibition elucidates the impact Gandhi’s principles of non-violence had on King, who later led the civil rights movement in America.
The exhibition started with a lamp-lighting ceremony by cultural attache David Mate and Lydia Barraza, assistant cultural affairs officer at the American Center. Mate joked, “That’s the first time I’ve done that!” Then he added, “We can’t go back in time, but we can remember the contribution of the African slaves, and the examples from India. If it hadn’t been for Gandhi, there would have been no Martin Luther King, and if it hadn’t been for Martin Luther King, there would be no
Obama today.”
