UNDERWHELMED: “I suppose it would be rude to say I’m not overwhelmed by the turnout,” said stand-up comedian, singer and actor Ash Chandler, when he performed at AI Lounge recently. And that set the tone for the evening, which was high on humour and style.
HIGH-FLYERS: Rajneesh, who opened for Ash, dug his claws right into Delhi and everything quintessentially Punjabi.
“In Delhi, healthy means, like here, you have four sizes of tees - small, medium, large and healthy,” he said. Then Ash came on, making fun of the turnout, of AD Singh, and even of the flight from Mumbai to the capital. “I felt safer, you know, knowing that the airline was owned by a doctor,” he joked.
MUSIC & LYRICS: The programme went on to see Ash belt out a number of classics in the style in which they were sung, imitating everyone from James Brown to Jim Morrison. The band Sultans of Swing accompanied him quite easily, considering they’d only met and started to practice with Ash five hours ago! Shonali Mathur was on her feet for the whole performance, dancing and singing along with Ash, easily his most enthusiastic audience.
HATS OFF: It seems there’s more often than not a hat around when AD’s around. Here too, AD pulled one out when he sat down to chat with Mohit Burman and his friend Susan Mizon, but it landed up equally soon on Akhil Nath’s head.
