This recent theatre production in the capital went housefull, with hundreds of people sitting in the Sri Ram Centre. The occasion was the staging of the Punjabi play Teri Amrita. The play is a love story, a translation of
Javed Siddiqui’s play Tumhari Amrita. It depicts the love story of two characters, Amrita and Zulfi, through an exchange of letters.
This play is a ‘comeback play’ of sorts for actor
Om Puri.
He was back to theatre after 25 years, he said. “At the age of 64, I want to go back to my first love, theatre,” he said. “It is a semi-retirement from films. I will be doing only theatre till February next year.”
Divya Dutta, who played the role of Amrita, said that it was her first play in Delhi. “I have staged play many times but as a professional, this is my first play in Delhi,” she said. Prior to Delhi, this play was staged in Mumbai as well.
Divya said, “After the play, Shabanaji came to me and praised me for my performance (
Shabana Azmi plays Amrita in the original).
Mujhe behad khushi hui.”
