Indian artist Sajid Wajid Sheikh wins prestigious International Art Residency prize
Indian artist Sajid Wajid Sheikh has been awarded the prestigious Henry Clews Prize 2026–2027, marking a significant milestone in his artistic journey. Granted by invitation every two years by the La Napoule Art Foundation, the prize supports a sculptor through a year-long residency at the Château de La Napoule, along with a research and creation grant. The residency will culminate in a summer exhibition showcasing works developed during his stay.
Established in honour of sculptor Henry Clews and his wife Marie Clews, the prize reflects their vision of the château as a space for artistic freedom, experimentation and international dialogue. Sculpture remains central to this legacy, with the historic site continuing to inspire contemporary artistic practices.
Sheikh first encountered the château during his 2025 residency under Villa Swagatam, an initiative by the French Institute in India and the French Embassy in India. His selection for the award highlights the enduring impact of such cultural exchange programmes.
Commending his achievement, Ambassador of France to India, H.E. Mr Thierry Mathou, said: “Through programmes such as Villa Swagatam, France and India are not only fostering artistic dialogue but also laying the foundation for transformative experiences that shape the trajectories of emerging artists. I congratulate Mr Sajid Wajid Sheikh for winning the Henry Clews Prize, illustrating how these pathways, once initiated, can evolve independently and meaningfully, and contribute to the deepening cultural cooperation between South Asia and France.’”
Based between Navi Mumbai and Aurangabad, Sheikh’s interdisciplinary practice spans sculpture, installations and film, often exploring themes of resistance and systemic tension.Get the latest entertainment updates from the Times of India, along with the latest Hindi movies, upcoming Hindi movies in 2026 , and Telugu movies.”
