And everyone seemed to know everyone else! What else can you expect when Punjabis of the world unite? And that’s exactly what it was, as the person who’d put together this evening, Jagmohan Singh, explained, “We’re celebrating Punjabi Divas 2011.

Everyone from across the globe has come to join us.” There was also an awards function to felicitate Punjabis the world over who’ve done their clan proud by going up the echelons of society and intermittently the emcee kept pleading everyone to stay a bit quiet for the function to get over. But that was not to be, and amidst loud conversations, many people got on to the stage and accepted their awards. Gul Panag was one of the first one in this category – as the lady had to go somewhere else. She got a good round of applause for thanking everyone prettily in Punjabi.
FDCI honcho Sunil Sethi got an award too, though when we had asked him earlier on as to what brought him here, he had said, “Bas, aisey hi.” He was sitting with boxer Vijender Singh, and added, “Aaj toh bas main inka handyman hoon – I have been with him, and we’re both coming from another function in CP.” We turned to Vijender – been keeping busy, huh? “Haan,” he said, “Thode bahut functions mein invited tha.” Modest, haan? Milkha Singh, the flying Sikh, was also felicitated, and when he made his speech, he called Jagmohan ‘Manhmohan’, and elicited laughter from everyone present. Soon, all this got over, and everyone began to have dinner, while discussing how life’s been treating them. “This is a fine opportunity to have dinner with dosts, to catch up and feel good,” said one of the guests, and that’s just what everyone did. “London mein toh...”, “This is nothing, Canada mein winter bahut sakath hoti hai...”, “Jab Michigan aayenge toh zaroor ghar aana...” and thus went on conversations...
