It’s not often that you get to see legendary cricketers in our City of Nawabs. So, the arrival of Australia’s Geoff Marsh and England’s Dermot Reeve understandably caused quite a stir in Lucknow. The duo were here on the invitation of Subrata Roy, who introduced the two as the head and assistant coach respectively of the Pune IPL Team, at a press conference held at Sahara Shahar recently.
YOUR HONOUR: When Subrata Roy announced Geoff Marsh’s name as the head coach, Marsh walked on to the stage smiling. “It’s a great honour to be a part of the Pune IPL Team and I’m really looking forward to my stint as coach. It’s a great challenge to bring a group of cricketers from across the world and work together,”
said Marsh.
HAR-HAR MAHADEV! Meanwhile the first thing Dermot Reeve said on stepping onto the dais was, “Namaskar, Har-har Mahadev!. Reeve recalled the days when he used to play six-a-side tournaments in Hong Kong. “It was before T20 was introduced. A game that involved only six players, and one side used to get only 30 balls to face. It used be a lot of fun. It was not like the T20 wherein you have to play 120 balls and each ball bowled is an event,” Reeve added.
GO-CARTING: After all the interaction with the media, Subrata Roy presented both the former cricketers a shawl and a sword each. Marsh and Reeve posed happily for the shutterbugs holding swords in their hands. When the press briefing got over, the two, along with Roy, sped away in a golf cart. “I’m going to play golf now,” joked Marsh as he bid everyone good bye.
